Why Write Horror for Kids?
The Short Version:
Childhood can be a terrifying experience. The world is bigger than you. The world is stronger than you. Your emotions are big but your communication is limited. I create monsters, then show kids how to defeat them. Horror not only entertains kids AND encourages them to read, but also demonstrates methods to face fear and anxiety. Horror for kids usually ends happily with a return to the status quo. Monster, vanquished!
Adolescence gets even scarier, and horror for teens can provide entertainment, escape, and catharsis. Teen Horror doesn't need a happy ending. Characters face uncertainty, risk, and make mistakes--deadly ones. Monsters mimic confusing emotions inside, and characters demonstrate productive (and not productive) ways to deal.
